Chapter 15

Brett and I had stayed up late again as we laid there talking. I got back to my dorm around five in the morning, long enough for a few hours of sleep before I needed to get up and start the day.

The majority of my classes were on Monday/Wednesday/Friday, so I’d be busy all afternoon. I felt almost giddy with happiness. For the girl who rarely smiled, that was a huge change. I couldn’t keep the grin off my face every time I thought of Brett, which was like every second.

He was nothing like I’d imagined he’d be, and everything I needed. I’d never been this happy or content in life. I had never given much thought to my true mate. I’d never even really believed in the stories, chalking them up to little more than fairytales, but it was all real.

I walked through my day trying to hold my usual invisible persona, but it wasn’t working. It was like the veil had been torn down and everyone was taking notice of me. It made me feel vulnerable and I didn’t like it.

Maybe I was putting off mating pheromones or something because of Brett, because for the first time since I’d started at the ARC, guys were beginning to pay attention to me, and I didn’t really understand why.

Personally, I loved my look despite what everyone, including my mother, thought of it. The piercings, the tattoos, they were all special to me. I dyed my hair because I loved the splash of color to my otherwise drab world.

The problem now was that my world didn’t feel so drab and colorless. I dressed in the same clothes I always wore, but I felt different, more confident, more beautiful. I could only guess it showed through now. I wasn’t used to the attention. Unlike some girls, I didn’t really care for it either.

“Hey, it’s Jade right?” a guy asked as I was standing in line to order pizza in the cafeteria. I almost always ate in the cafeteria simply because it was the best deal and my meal plan was already paid for.

“Yeah,” I said, hoping my tone would tell him to back off without me having to actually say the words.

“I’m Darren, it’s nice to finally meet you. I’ve been wanting to introduce myself for a while. I think it’s really cool how you’re standing up the fascists on Greek Row.”

This time last week I would have probably squealed and kissed this guy. By all outward appearances he was exactly my type. He was good looking enough and wearing all black. His hair was even dyed black and he had heavy black eyeliner around his eyes and several visible piercings.

“That’s not really what I’m about,” I tried to explain to him though I didn’t want to waste my time and energy trying too hard because while to the outside world we probably looked like a perfect couple, in my heart I was already claimed.

I knew the second Brett walked in. I could feel his presence as if he were standing next to me.
